All surface installations come down to some basic rules of thumb for longevity and by following these basic principles:

1- Better bases- Whether it is a concrete driveway, new interlocking, or asphalt, it all comes down to what is under the surface. Better quality and deeper bases for interlock, material underlays, and more reinforcement of rebar all play a huge part in how long your will surfaces last. 2- Quality Techniques – Even though most installations will appear to have been carried out in the same way, there are many procedures that (if not followed properly) can result in surface failure. The way in which concrete and expansion joints are stamped and finished, the consistency of material mixtures for wall overlays, and temperatures of installations all play a huge role in the final outcome and longevity of any surface.

3- Materials used – Defining the “right material” can be a relatively small or unnoticeable difference in type or quality. However, this can mean the difference between an installation that is either long-lasting or a failure.

4- Tools and equipment – We believe that the saying “with the right equipment a project can be done in a fraction of the time” is very true and we strive to live this out in all our operations.

5- Finally, experience and/or the training of installers. Many fly-by-night companies have little or no experience, use the incorrect techniques and, when things fail, will not answer phone calls or will simply disappear. SealKastle uses highly experienced installers with backgrounds you can trust. With us, things simply do not go wrong and if touch-ups or maintenance is required, you can be assured that SealKastle will be there for your full support.

 

Stamped Concrete or Decorative Concrete Installation

Our REGULAR CONCRETE INSTALLATION will apply prior to Stamped process.

1. At the right stage of concrete plasticity, broadcast the color hardener. Work from the middle and back toward the edge to avoid a buildup. Allow 10 minutes for water absorption and then float into the surface. Repeat the process and apply a second layer.

Immediately before stamping, apply a powdered release with a dry brush in a flicking motion to avoid excessive buildup.

2. Apply release agent to impart subtle color contrast and are good for preventing stamping mats from sticking to the concrete and disturbing imprint texture.

3. Test to see if the concrete is ready before stamping, pretexture along the perimeter of the slab with a texturing skin or flex mat.

4. Pretexture the slab perimeter. Pretexture along the edges. With a stamp, the tool will overlap the edge of the form.

5. Place the first row of stamps Stamp in a uniform sequencer.

Ensure you have enough stamps to finish a complete row plus two additional tools for the next one.
Place the first row of stamps in a straight line as this is the benchmark for the rest of the job. Use a string line for square or rectangular patterns. For notched or irregular stamp patterns, check alignment with the edge form as a reference point.

8. Remove residual release agent and apply curing compound Don’t apply curing compound until the residual release agent is washed off.  Once clean and dry, spray on a liquid membrane-forming curing compound or a cure and seal. If using a clear or tinted liquid release, apply the curing membrane to the slab the same day.

9. Install joints Cut expansion joints at the correct depth and space soon after placement to provide stress relief. Form joints in the concrete as it begins to set using a groover or wait to cut the joint until after the concrete has set using a saw with a diamond or abrasive blade. A sawed joint is less noticeable than grooving.

Use a V-shaped groover to install control joints in the fresh concrete (or with a handheld saw, if set). Expansion joints should be cut at least one-fourth of the slab thickness.

10. Seal the concrete, SealKastle Cure and Seal technique. Once curing is complete, apply a finish coat of sealer. Do not apply the sealer too heavily. Apply sealer by spraying when the stamped pattern has deep grout lines.

Maintaining Your Surfaces

It’s important to know that interlocking and stamped concrete loses a great deal of colour if not maintained properly. Leading manufacturers advise that you seal your surfaces every two to four years depending on the material and sealers applied. Naturally, this recommendation makes great economic sense when you consider the cost of the initial investment in such a high-end purchase. That’s why protecting interlocking with premium-grade sealers is essential to the life of your surface. Wet-look and natural-look sealers are high in acrylics. They work by creating a protective, transparent coating that also enhances the original colour. Premium grade sealers also reduce oil and dirt penetration, making cleaning easier. Because the sealers penetrate deep into the surface – maximum adhesion and durability are maintained. Unlike cheaper alternatives, Premium grade sealers will not peel or discolour and are highly resistant to the elements (freeze-thaw cycles, sun, rain, etc.), calcium and salt and hot tire pick-up.
